1. About 1/2 PCD
The Shape: Unlike a “Full Round” PCD, a 1/2 PCD (or Half-PCD) uses a smaller, semi-circular polycrystalline diamond chip.
The Action: PCDs do not grind the floor; they scrape and shred. Because the 1/2 PCD has a smaller surface area than a full round, it exerts higher point pressure, making it excellent for “shaving” off tough materials.
2. The Role of the “Wear Bar”
The wear bar (also called a stabilizer bar or sacrificial segment) is a metal-bond diamond segment placed behind or alongside the PCD. It serves two critical functions:
Depth Control: It acts as a “bumper” to prevent the aggressive PCD from digging too deep and gouging the concrete substrate.
Initial Prep: While the PCD shreds the coating, the wear bar provides a light grind to the concrete, helping to clean up the residue left behind in a single pass.
3. Best Use Cases
This PCD tool is the “go-to” for removing medium-to-thin coatings that would otherwise gum up standard diamond segments:
Epoxies and Urethanes: Shreds through the plastic-like layer.
Mastics and Glues: Removes sticky residues without smearing.
Paint and Thin-set: Rapidly clears the surface for new flooring.
